This year's ACBW celebrates brewers' community citizenship. From the website: "For the first time ever, the Brewers Association announced U.S. craft breweries' charitable contributions, and for 2007 they are estimated to be more than $20 million." We at Metropolitan are proud be joining the professional craft brewing community. We plan to continue the tradition of generosity established by our fine colleagues. This year, we are engrossed in getting the brewery up and running. Next year, we'll hold an event or two during American Craft Beer Week. But you don't need us to celebrate! Click here to visit the Brewers Association event locator. If you choose IL, you'll see that the Drinking and Writing Brewery will be holding its Second Annual Beerfly Alleyfight at Rock Bottom Brewery in Chicago. We know from first-hand experience that this event is a rip-roarin' good time. Support craft beer! It's fun, it's tasty, and it's good for the community. |

Saturday, September 29, 2007 - Homebrewers Pride of the Southside Oktoberfest
The Southside of Chicago is home to one of the friendliest and most enthusiastic homebrewing clubs a mash-rake wielding geek could ever find. They call themselves HOPS! and if your goal is to discuss, ponder, and taste beer, mead, and yet-to-be named creations (revealed and shared later in the evening), this is your crowd. This year, we were invited to join them for a roudy Oktoberfest celebration. Doug brewed up a beta batch of Oktoberfest for the event, natch.
We arrived Chicago Bridgeport VFW Post 5079 with enough time to set up our table, keg, promo picture frame, etc. We proudly looked upon our display and then turned around... to find a sea of kegs just like ours. People were bustling around attaching gas lines and labels, chipping apart blocks of ice, and getting a start on the beer-tasting portion of the day. Realizing that we were among truly kindred spirits, our only option was to join in and attach, chip, and taste as much as we could.
The attendees were greeted by piles of hot, slow-cooked food, keg after keg of homebrewed beer - you name the style, it was there - and festive German drinking songs powering out of the PA.
But wait, there's more! There were some fantastic meads featured as well. A specially designated area was set up for mead-tasting just inside the VFW hall. Good thing too, because the crowd grew and grew. The volunteers were quite serious about their task of serving up the fruity elixirs. Or not. Mouse over the photo and decide for yourself. Many thanks to the dedicated and hospitable members of HOPS! The day flew by as we served up and drank many beers, chatted with old friends, made some new friends, and engaged in egg-headed conversations about our favorite quaffables. Prost!

Saturday, June 9, 2007 - The 3rd Annual Drinking and Writing Festival
The sun was hot. The classical music favored by Buk was live... and fantastic. Jason, our resident horn player, personally attested to the band's skill, even in the instrument-warping heat. And the people were great. We're not sure if The Drinking and Writing Brewery creates it or channels it, but the energy of their events is always friendly, engaged, and amped up to celebrate writing and its controversial muse... alcohol. Familiar faces and many new friends visited our table. We poured samples and asked for opinions. Without a doubt, Krankshaft was popular. Just a few hours into the event, our keg sputtered into oblivion. Next year, we'll bring two. Dozens of people signed our emailing list, complimented the beer, and wished us good luck. We say thanks! May we all run headlong into good luck as often as possible. |
